Pleats at Work is a workwear design project exploring how patternmaking can enhance functionality, comfort, and mobility during repetitive physical labor. The two-piece set features a cropped blue jacket and gray camouflage cargo trousers, with sustainability in mind this outfit was constructed from 100% recycled bedsheets. Strategically engineered pleats across the lower back and elbows provide additional ease where the body needs it most, allowing greater freedom of movement during reaching, bending, and repetitive tasks. The trousers incorporate modular tool attachments and reinforced cargo pockets, creating an integrated tool-carrying system, as well as featuring a relocated side-fly closure that improves comfort during squatting and kneeling. By combining functional pattern manipulation with a cohesive visual aesthetic, this project reimagines traditional workwear through a balance of ergonomic performance, durability, and thoughtful design. It also explores a more sustainable approach to functional apparel by engineering movement through pattern construction rather than relying on synthetic stretch materials. This project was made during one of my courses at Washington State University (AMDT 311, Apparel Flat Patterning and Design) and was accepted to the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Design Exhibition for the 2026 Exhibition in Jacksonville Florida.
